Paper Plate Masks
This activity is part craft, part costume, part storytelling. Kids can become animals, superheroes, monsters, or completely made-up characters.
What you'll need
Supplies for this activity
Chances are most of it is already in your craft drawer or kitchen.
Paper plate
Markers or washable paint
Glue
Feathers, paper scraps, stickers, or yarn
Child-safe scissors
Craft stick or elastic string
Step by step
Let's make it
- 1
Plan the character
Choose what the mask will be โ tiger, butterfly, superhero, monster, or something brand new.
Craft Coach tip
Let the idea get weird. Weird is good.
- 2
Cut the eye holes
A grown-up can help cut eye holes in the plate.
Craft Coach tip
Hold the plate up first to mark the spot.
- 3
Decorate the front
Paint or color the mask and add all the fun extras.
Craft Coach tip
Big shapes read better than tiny details.
- 4
Add a handle or string
Tape on a craft stick or attach elastic so the mask can be worn.
Craft Coach tip
A stick handle is easiest for younger kids.
- 5
Start the show
Put the mask on and invent a character voice or tiny performance.
Craft Coach tip
The play after the craft is part of the value.
