Rainbow Density Jar
This one looks impressive fast and gives you an easy opening to talk about heavy and light liquids. It is visual, satisfying, and surprisingly calm.
What you'll need
Supplies for this activity
Chances are most of it is already in your craft drawer or kitchen.
Clear jar or glass
Honey or syrup
Dish soap
Water
Cooking oil
Food coloring
Step by step
Let's make it
- 1
Color the water
Mix a few drops of food coloring into water so the middle layers pop.
Craft Coach tip
Use a bright blue or green for contrast.
- 2
Pour the heaviest liquid first
Add honey or syrup to the bottom of the jar.
Craft Coach tip
Go slowly so the layer stays clean.
- 3
Add the next layers
Pour in dish soap, then colored water, then oil โ very gently.
Craft Coach tip
Pouring over the back of a spoon helps.
- 4
Watch the layers settle
Give the jar a minute and notice how the liquids separate.
Craft Coach tip
Kids love spotting the line between layers.
- 5
Explain density simply
Heavier liquids sink lower; lighter ones float higher.
Craft Coach tip
That one sentence is enough.
